Preparing a Quilt for Quilting

Before you send a quilt it is a good idea to do the following:

  1. Trim stray threads from the back of your pieced top. They will often show up through the fabric on top after quilting.
  2. Stitch a narrow row (1/8 inch to 1/4 inch) of stitches at the edge of the quilt. If there are bias edges this will minimize stretch. If there are seams perpendicular to the edge of the quilt this will stabilize them so those seams don’t come open with handling. This is not an absolute requirement, but it certainly has been helpful on the ones I have received with this done.
  3. Press your top and look for any seams that may have not been completely sewn. They will open with the stretch of the quilting frame.
  4. Make your back at least 6 inches wider and 6 inches longer (3 inches all the way around) than your top. Larger is ok. I will resize if I need to.
  5. Make certain your batting is at least 6 inches wider and 6 inches longer (3 inches all the way around) than your top. I will trim if I need to.
